US Wealth Report 2015

Different HNWI bands respond differently to economic changes due to differing asset allocations, with UHNWIs tending to have higher alternative and business interest holdings, while core HNWIs and lower-tier millionaires tend to place a larger share of their assets in cash and property.

Core HNWIs – also called core millionaires – consist of two wealth bands: mid-tier millionaires and lower-tier millionaires. As their name implies, core millionaires are the base of the wealth pyramid, accounting for 99.2% of US HNWIs. Core HNWIs collectively accounted for 71.4% of US HNWI wealth in 2014; above the global average of 70%.

The report analysis found that core HNWIs are typically younger than their wealthier peers, and are more likely to have earned their wealth through a salaried position. Core HNWIs generally hold large proportions of their wealth in cash and other low-risk products.
