Insight Report: Mobile Point of Sale – Global Market Size, Composition, Trends and Outlook

Mobile point of sale (mPOS) consists of technology that accepts face-to-face card payments through smartphones or tablets. It typically includes a card reader, and supporting software, that connects to a mobile device through a socket or Bluetooth. Most EMV devices also include a PIN pad. Moreover, some mPOS products have evolved into sophisticated sales systems which support multiple processes through the same application.

There are multiple operational models in the mPOS industry, and in some cases the models overlap. GlobalData has classified the models into three major categories: mPOS payment service providers (PSPs), integrators and developers.

mPOS has been a focus of cards and payments industry experts since the beginning of the decade. The technology has the potential to expand card acceptance among small merchants, and improve the efficiency of established merchants. Six years after Square launched its first card reader, however, numerous mPOS businesses worldwide are still fighting to break even. The global mPOS market is still very small.
