SCL – Sethusamudram Shipping Canal – Tamil Nadu

Sethusamudram Corporation Ltd (SCL), a special purpose vehicle formed by the government, is planning to undertake the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project near Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, India.The project involves boring a 167km long, 30m wide, 11m deep water channel linking the shallow water of the Palk Strait with the Gulf of Mannar. In July 2005, Dredging Corporation of India Limited was awarded as the dredging contractor for the project. Dredging works were commenced and expected to be completed in four years, however, due to environmental and technical issues the dredging works were stopped in July 2009. In September 2011, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been formed to study a viable alternative site for the project. The project was planned to be funded on a debt-equity ratio of 1:1.5. However, because of uncertainties in the project implementation the company was not been able to raise loans. Ministry of Shipping is looking at four to five options and the project is under a legal litigation before the Supreme Court of India.On November 12, 2017, The government decided to file a new affidavit suggesting alternative routes for the project.Study activities are underway for alternative routes. The project is facing delay due to religious grounds.

Dredging of 11m deep water canal2. Construction of 300m wide shipping lane
