Private networks utilize a wireless spectrum to offer services dedicated to enterprises. Most private networks have been based on 4G technology so far, but enterprises and private network providers are looking to 5G private networks for faster speed transmission and lower latency. RAN equipment vendors play an important role in the private network value chain, providing the essential equipment. Some countries such as the US, Germany, and Japan have taken proactive steps to encourage private networks through spectrum policies meant to encourage enterprise cellular technology use.

Cellular network platform vendors have developed compelling solutions designed for private 4G/5G networks, driving the market from the supply side Nokia, Ericsson, and Huawei especially have worked hard to create the market, going direct to enterprises, providing low-cost trials, and working together with telco or system integrator partners to develop opportunities. Regulators have started making spectrum available for use by private organizations at an affordable cost Without access to public radio spectrum for providing wireless access, private cellular networks would not be possible.

What are the market dynamics in the private 4G/5G networks?

Drivers of the 4G/5G private network market include the availability of spectrum and advanced use cases. Private networks enable bespoke coverage where it is needed for example, in a factory, a remote mine, an offshore oil platform, or a seaport. A private network can provide customized bandwidth and latency requirements for specific use cases in those locations, or simply fill in gaps in public network coverage In some cases, lack of public 5G network coverage, and especially 5G standalone access (SA) drives demand for private solutions from availability and time to market perspective.

Inhibitors of the 4G/5G private network market include complexity, cost, and the need for mobility. Global telecom operators have been competing to offer private network services to enterprises, leveraging their networks 5G network rollouts across the world and edge computing are becoming key enablers to private networks. Telcos are working to meet the increasing demand from businesses for private networks with dedicated but flexible bandwidth, with high availability, ultra-low latency, and enhanced security to support use cases for “constrained” locations, such as buildings or campuses.

What are the different technologies in the private network deployment?

Most private networks have been based on 4G technology so far, but enterprises and private network providers are looking to 5G private networks for faster speed transmission and lower latency. At the heart of any private cellular offering is the base station, which processes, transmits, and receives wireless signals. Typically, these base stations provide 4G/LTE or 5G. New Radio signals. In the early stages of private network adoption, most deployments have been based on 4G, since it is a mature technology that has become familiar to operators. It has advanced technologically while achieving economies of scale that have improved its cost-effectiveness and it benefits from a broad and robust ecosystem of compatible devices, including handsets, and tablets. At the same time, 5G represents the future of network evolution, which has made 5G evolution paths are an important requirement in many private networks.

The latest 5G industry-standard, completed in June 2020 adds capabilities that help enable private networks to be tailored for enterprise needs 3 GPP Release 16 includes support for IIoT integrated access and backhaul (simplifying small cell deployment), further reductions in latency, enhancements to uplink transmission, vehicle to anything communications, and precise positioning. The next step in 5G’s evolution, known as 5G Advanced, is expected to be commercially available by late 2023.

What are the approaches to a private network by different countries?

Some countries have taken proactive steps to encourage private networks through spectrum policies meant to encourage enterprise cellular technology use. In 2020, US regulators authorized a unique mechanism to enable private networks wherein spectrum that was originally dedicated to government use can be shared for commercial use. The Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) allows the public to license portions of a 150 MHz swath of the 3.5 GHz band (3,550 MHz to 3,700 MHz) in three tiers.

Incumbent Access federal government and authorized fixed-satellite service use, which is prioritized amid any network congestion periods and protected from all interference. Priority Access was obtained via auctioned licenses of 10 MHz channels, spanning a single US census tract for three years, protected from interference from general access users.  German regulators have allowed local use of 3.7-3.8GHz spectrum for 4G and 5G services in an effort to encourage enterprise adoption. By June 2021, Germany had issued 123 licenses for this spectrum, including to universities, airports, and automakers such as BMW, Mercedes Ben z, and Porsche. In early 2021 the country began accepting applications for local use of 24.25-27.5 GHz spectrum, requiring applicants to plan service launches within one year.

Business Intelligence & Marketing Manager, SAL Heavy Lift

“COVID-19 has caused significant interference to our business and the COVID-19 intelligence from GlobalData has helped us reach better decisions around strategy. These two highlights have helped enormously to understand the projections into the future concerning our business units, we also utilise the project database to source new projects for Liebherr-Werk to use as an additional source to pitch for new business.”

Market Analyst & Management, Liebherr-Werk

Your daily news has saved me a lot of time and keeps me up-to-date with what is happening in the market, I like that you almost always have a link to the source origin. We also use your market data in our Strategic Business Process to support our business decisions. By having everything in one place on the Intelligence Center it has saved me a lot of time versus looking on different sources, the alert function also helps with this.

Head of Key Accounts, Saab AB

Having used several other market research companies, I find that GlobalData manages to provide that ‘difficult-to-get’ market data that others can’t, as well as very diverse and complete consumer surveys.

Marketing Intelligence Manager, Portugal Foods

Our experience with GlobalData has been very good, from the platform itself to the people. I find that the analysts and the account team have a high level of customer focus and responsiveness and therefore I can always rely on. The platform is more holistic than other providers. It is convenient and almost like a one stop shop. The pricing suite is highly competitive and value for our organisation.

I like reports that inform new segments such as the analysis on generation Z, millennials, the impact of COVID 19 to our banking customers and their new channel habits. Secondly the specialist insight on affluent sector significantly increases our understanding about this group of customers. The combination of those give us depth and breadth of the evolving market.

I’m in the business of answering and helping people make decisions so with the intelligence center I can do that, effectively and efficiently. I can share quickly key insights that answer and satisfy our country stakeholders by giving them many quality studies and primary research about competitive landscape beyond the outlook of our bank. It helps me be seen as an advisory partner and that makes a big difference. A big benefit of our subscription is that no one holds the whole data and because it allows so many people, so many different parts of our organisation have access, it enables all teams to have the same level of knowledge and decision support.

Head of Customer Insight and Research, Standard Chartered

“I know that I can always rely on Globaldata’s work when I’m searching for the right consumer and market insights. I use Globaldata insights to understand the changing market & consumer landscape and help create better taste & wellbeing solutions for our customers in food, beverage and healthcare industries.

Globaldata has the right data and the reports are of very high quality compared to your competitors. Globaldata not only has overall market sizes & consumer insights on food & beverages but also provides insights at the ingredient & flavour level. That is key for B2B companies like Givaudan. This way we understand our customers’ business and also gain insight to our unique industry”

Head of Consumer Sensory Insights, Givaudan

GlobalData provides a great range of information and reports on various sectors that is highly relevant, timely, easy to access and utilise.  The reports and data dashboards help engagement with clients; they provide valuable industry and market insights that can enrich client conversations and can help in the shaping of value propositions. Moreover, using GlobalData products has helped increase my knowledge of the finance sector, the players within it, and the general threats and opportunities.

I find the consumer surveys that are carried out to be extremely beneficial and not something I have seen anywhere else. They provided an insightful view of why and which consumers take (or don’t) particular financial products. This can help shape conversations with clients to ensure they make the right strategic decisions for their business.

One of the challenges I have found is that data in the payments space is often piecemeal. With GD all of the data I need is in one place, but it also comes with additional market reports that provide useful extra context and information. Having the ability to set-up alerts on relevant movements in the industry, be it competitors or customers, and have them emailed directly to me, ensures I get early sight of industry activity and don’t have to search for news.
