Global Bauxite Mining to 2020

Bauxite is a rock made up of laterite soil, which is the primary raw material used in the production of alumina and aluminium metal. It is mainly found in tropical areas, where intense decomposition aids in its generation. Generally, bauxite is found in a thin layer, typically 2–5 meters close to the surface. According to the USGS, global bauxite reserves were 28.1 billion tonnes (Bnt) as of January 2015.

Over 90% of alumina produced globally is used for production of aluminium metal, termed Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA) or metallurgical, with the remainder known as Non-Metallic Grade Alumina (NMGA) or non-metallurgical, which can be used in applications such as cement and slag conditioning.

Global reserves of bauxite were 28.1 Bnt as of January 2015. Guinea has the largest reserves with 7.4Bnt or 26% of global reserves, followed by Australia with 6.5Bnt. Bauxite deposits at Weipa in Queensland and Gove in the Northern Territory, both in Australia, are amongst the world's highest grade deposits. Brazil with reserves at 2.6Bnt ranked third with key deposits in Trombetas while Vietnam, Jamaica and Indonesia follow with 2.1Bnt, 2.0Bnt and 1.0Bnt of reserves respectively.

In 2014, global bauxite mine production was an estimated 263 million tonnes (Mt). Australia was the leading producer with 81Mt or 34.5% of the global output in 2014, followed by China with an estimated 47Mt (20%), Brazil with 32.5Mt (13.9%), Guinea with 19.3Mt (8.2%) and India with 19Mt (8.1%). Indonesia in 2014 produced just 500kt due to the ban on export of raw ores since the beginning of 2014, compared with the high of 55.7Mt it produced in 2013.
