Global LNG Liquefaction Industry Outlook to 2025 – Capacity and Capital Expenditure Outlook with Details of All Operating and Planned Liquefaction Terminals

The total global LNG liquefaction capacity was valued at 457 mtpa (million tons per annum) in 2020 and is forecast to record a AAGR of more than 9% during 20212025. In 2020, Australia had the highest liquefaction capacity. By 2025, 30 LNG liquefaction terminals were being expected to commence operations globally. Africa is expected to witness start of operations of five new build liquefaction terminals with a total liquefaction capacity of 11 mtpa by 2025.

The largest liquefaction terminals of Asia are Badak (Indonesia), MLNG Dua (Malaysia), and MLNG Satu (Malaysia) respectively. The liquefaction capacity in Asia increased from 2015 to 2020 at an AAGR of 1.4 percent. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei are the three countries in Asia with active LNG liquefaction terminals in 2020.

The major liquefaction terminals of Caribbean are Atlantic Train IV (Trinidad and Tobago), Atlantic Train II (Trinidad and Tobago), and Atlantic Train III (Trinidad and Tobago) with capacities of 5 mtpa, 3 mtpa and 3 mtpa respectively. Trinidad and Tobago is the only country in Caribbean with active LNG liquefaction terminals in 2020.

The liquefaction capacity in Europe remains unchanged at 4 mtpa from 2015 to 2025. Norway is the only country in Europe with LNG liquefaction terminal in 2020. Snohvit (Norway) is the only liquefaction terminal of Europe. It started operations in 2007. The Former Soviet Union is expected to witness start of operations of six liquefaction terminals with a total liquefaction capacity of 57 mtpa by 2025.

The major liquefaction terminals of the Middle East are Ras Laffan III (Qatar), Ras Laffan II (Qatar), and Qatargas I (Qatar) respectively. Qatar, Oman Yemen and United Arab Emirates are the countries in Middle East with active LNG liquefaction terminals in 2020.

The major liquefaction terminals of the Middle East are Ras Laffan III (Qatar), Ras Laffan II (Qatar), and Qatargas I (Qatar). These have started operations in 2009, 2004 and 1996 respectively. Qatar, Oman Yemen and United Arab Emirates are the countries in Middle East with active LNG liquefaction terminals in 2020.

Australia, Qatar, the US, Indonesia, and Malaysia are the key countries globally that accounted for over 65% of the total liquefaction capacity of the world in 2020.
