Amazon has taken top over the top spot in GlobalData’s thematic screen for the consumer electronics sector following our Q1 2021 review. The company’s superior score for the COVID-19 theme (its rating is 5 out of 5, while Apple’s is 4 out of 5) was the clinching factor. Nevertheless, Apple is better placed than Amazon in key themes like wearable tech and virtual and augmented reality.
This sector scorecard provides a top-down, comprehensive outlook for the key players in the consumer electronics sector over the next two years, based on the key themes set to transform their industry landscape.
Sony has moved up two places to fourth following our latest review of thematic scores. The company weathered the storm of COVID-19 well, with its game and network services division performing exceptionally well. The increase in demand for gaming during lockdowns drove sales up 34%. Sony has also benefited from the launch of the PlayStation 5 in November 2020.
Reasons to buy
Companies that invest in the right themes become success stories; those that miss the big themes end up as failures. Given that so many themes are disruptive, it is very easy to be blindsided by industry outsiders that invade your sector.
To help our clients gain a competitive advantage, we have developed GlobalData’s thematic research ecosystem. This single, integrated global research platform provides an easy-to-use framework for tracking all themes across all companies in all sectors.
This report is a sector scorecard, which identifies those companies most likely to succeed in a world filled with disruptive threats.
