Brazil Iron Ore Mining to 2025 – Updated with Impact of COVID-19

Brazil is home to the world’s second largest iron ore reserves, after Australia. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), Brazil had 34 billion tonnes (Bnt) of crude ore reserves as of February 2021, mainly located in the states of Minas Gerais and Para. In 2020, country’s iron ore production fell by 1.2% over 2019 – mainly due to lower output from the country’s largest producer Vale SA. The company’s production fell due to couple of reasons including tailings dam restrictions, a delay in the resumption of the Serra Norte mine, heavy rainfall and the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. In 2021, Vale is expected to have a resumption of 40Mt of capacity, taking its overall production capacity to 350Mt, compared with 322Mt in 2020. The major portion of the country’s iron ore production is meant for exports. China is the country’s largest export destination, which grew by 19.4% in 2020 over the previous year – mainly driven by strong demand from the country’s steel industry, resulting from a revival in construction activities.

Scope

The report contains an overview of Brazil’s iron ore mining industry, historical and forecast data on the production and exports. The demand driving section includes how China’s steel and construction industry will affect the demand for Brazilian iron ore. The report also provides detailed information on reserves, production, production by company, major active, exploration and development projects in the country. It also includes the fiscal regime that governs Brazil’s mining industry
