Global Coal Mining to 2025 – Updated with Impact of COVID-19

Global coal mine production declined by 2.0% to 7.7 billion tonnes (Bnt) in 2020, primarily due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the temporary suspension of several mines, amid weak coal demand. In addition, mine-specific issues such as pit sequencing at the Moorvale mine; the planned dragline outage at Coppabella; a 91-day strike at Cerrejon; longwall moves at the Grasstree and Oaky Creek; an underground methane explosion at the Grosvenor mine and geotechnical challenges at the Moranbah in Q4 2020 further impacted coal mine production in 2020. Production over the forecast period (2021-2025) is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.3%, to reach 8.8Bnt in 2025.
