Monomer World – May 2011

The global monomer industry experienced a significant reduction in demand for downstream derivatives in May 2011. In most regions, this reduced demand caused the prices of monomers to significantly decrease. Shell’s Pulau Bukom (Singapore) ethylene and propylene unit are operational once again after being shut in March, and the majority of the ethylene and propylene units which were closed due to damage caused by the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, also returned to normal operations. In North America and Europe, the maintenance season for monomer plants is over and many of the plants have restarted production. As a result, supply has increased despite reduced demand, a situation which caused a decrease in prices.
