What are the market dynamics of the automotive battery technologies market?
Not so long ago, the automotive industry was protecting an old technology yet nowadays it appears to have embraced the need for hybrids and the use of advanced battery technology. Macroeconomic, political, and environmental events such as oil dependency, new competition, and increasing carbon emissions have all contributed towards the new move to the electrification of transportation. Most of the hybrid fleet is powered by nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, mainly due to the power density, energy density durability.
Energy security is a major worldwide political concern and a driver for governments to consider alternative fuels and to push electrified vehicles onto the market. In the US, for example, it has been a major driver of the development of shale oil reserves and fracking for natural gas, which it is reported should see the US self-sufficient in energy by 2025.
Meanwhile, the stubbornly high cost of battery packs remains a hurdle for battery producers. If the cost of battery packs can be significantly reduced, the cost of reduction would come from efficient factory management, cutting waste, and other management-related expenses or fundamental improvements in battery technology.
What are the key segments of the automotive battery technologies market?
The key automotive battery technologies market segments are advanced automotive batteries and starter batteries.
Advanced automotive batteries segment in automotive battery technologies market
An advanced automotive battery (NiMH or lithium-ion) is fitted to newly-assembled electric, PHEV, and hybrid passenger car. These batteries have increased power density, more efficient systems, cells that are easier to thermally manage, better lower temperature performance, and more stable cell chemistry that leads to long cycle life and improved cell level safety.
Starter batteries segment in automotive battery technologies market
Automotive lead-acid batteries are commonly referred to as SLI (starting, lighting, ignition) batteries which are 12V and rechargeable. These batteries supply power to the starter and ignition system to start the engine and supply power to other components within the vehicle (such as the clock) that require continuous power. Lead-acid batteries also supply power when the vehicle’s electrical load exceeds the supply from the charging system (alternator) and acts as a voltage stabilizer in the electrical system, smoothing out the voltage spikes and preventing them from damaging other components in the electrical system.
